Extinct Birds of Central Otago

Extinct Birds of

Central Otago

Several now extinct birds once lived in Central Otago, such as four species of Moa, South Island Piopio, Finsch’s Duck and the Haast Eagle.

In this exhibition, illustrations from the book ‘Extinct Birds of New Zealand’ by Alan Tennyson and Paul Martinson have been enlarged according to what is believed to have been their actual size.

All extinct bird images are reproduced courtesy of Te Papa Tongarewa, The National Museum of New Zealand.
