Central Otago

Central Otago is a distinctive landscape shaped by a long geological history.

This landscape was eroded over 60 million years ago then uplifted in the last 2 million years to create ranges and basins found all across this region. Before then, the climate in Central Otago was sub-tropical.

The land had a cover of rain forest and the breakdown of rocks occurred due to chemical alteration of minerals by groundwater.
