Chinese Settlement Project

Hidden Dragon

This exhibition elaborates upon the history of the Chinese goldmines who came to Cromwell during the gold rush of the 1860s

Who were they?

Chinese miners came to New Zealand in search of gold in the 1800's.

But what do you know of the Chinese people who came to this area?

Who they were, what they achieved, and the impact they had on the emerging community at the junction of the

Kawerau and Clutha Mata-Au rivers: Tīrau Cromwell.

Vision

Cromwell’s exciting update to our Arts and Heritage Precinct will include a new museum space. The wider information that will be available, will link with a recreated Chinese dwelling to be built on a site directly above the original settlement. This project is the initiative of the Cromwell & Districts Community Trust.
